Assessment 1:
Baseline Assessments:
Strengths- Baseline assessments are given to assess a students knowledge on a subject prior to instruction. These assessments can be very informative and valuable in a teacher’s planning and implementation. By assessing your students’ prior knowledge you are able to compare results. This shows you the change or growth that takes place due to the intervention or instruction (Gathering and Analyzing, n.d.)
Weaknesses- Baseline assessments can be time consuming and teachers are already feeling a crunch for time. The style or format of the assessment can be overwhelming to students. Many of these students have not seen this content before and may feel intimidated by the fact that they do not know all of the answers. Prior to giving a baseline assessment, teachers should be intentional in letting the students know the purpose of the assessment to ease these feelings of anxiety.
Role of Technology- Technology already plays an ample role in the collection and utilization of baseline data. Baseline assessments can be given online. One such program is the ATI-Galileo Online Assessments. This program provides a risk analysis based on the baseline data to guide instruction. This expedites the data collection and use. Technology is also a great way to organize the data. Many programs can be used to collect this data, but one of the most popular programs is Excel. The use of online graphs also can show the growth obtained from a baseline assessment. Teachers are integrating the use of Clickers (classroom Performance Systems) to collect this baseline data.
